5 Lesser Known but Massively Influential Inventions

(Newswire.net — August 10, 2021) — With the rapid pace of new innovations today, some of the most impactful inventions can go unnoticed. In this article, we will be going through just a few of the most influential inventions that have seemed to go under the radar.

The Semiconductor

The semiconductor is an invention that almost nobody has heard of. Although, semiconductors revolutionized the world because of what they allowed computers to do.

A semiconductor is a small wafer of silicone that carries a small electrical charge, but not very well. Semiconductors can be programmed to perform a plethora of instructions that a computer would otherwise not have been able to perform.

It’s more than likely that you have a semiconductor in the very computer you may be looking at this article with now. Without a semiconductor, that may not have been possible.

Self-retaining Retractor

The self-retaining surgical retractor by June Medical is one of the more recent inventions on our list. However, the long-lasting impacts that this invention will have in the future are incalculable.

This new innovation is an upgrade from the previous model of retractor which is commonly used by almost every hospital in the world. The self-retaining retractor is able to be used by itself, with no additional personnel required to hold it on the surgeon’s behalf, as well as having the capabilities of being adjusted easily with just one hand. This will more than likely play a key role in reducing the number of staff required in the OR in the future.

Nitrogen Fixation

The process of nitrogen fixation has likely saved many people from starvation, as well as potentially saving humanity as a whole.

Nitrogen fixation is the process of creating ammonia from reacting nitrogen and hydrogen gas. In turn, this allows fertiliser to be made on a wide scale, allowing food to be grown much quicker than was ever thought to be possible.

Electronic Health Records (EHRs)

The conception and innovation of electronic health records have revolutionised how hospitals operate. With electronic health records, doctors and nurses can have next to instant access to any patients’ records including vital information such as blood type, conditions, previous surgeries, and a variety of other vital knowledge.

In turn, this is able to allow operations or treatments to go ahead much quicker than ever before.

Hypodermic Needles

Last but not least, we have the invention of hypodermic needles. There is an extensive list of benefits of hypodermic needles, but to sum it up, these needles are able to enter people’s skin with extreme ease, while also being next to impossible to contaminate.

Because of this, hypodermic needles have likely saved thousands of lives just because of their ability to stay sanitised.

There are many other inventions that easily deserved to be on this list. It’s shocking to think that some of the innovations that managed to change the lives of millions of people are not even acknowledged.  However, the benefits that those inventors were able to bring to humanity is a reward in itself, and recognition for their efforts is just a nice bonus.
