The Answers to Questions About Ticks

(Newswire.net — June 20, 2016) — A tick is not an insect or a spider, technically speaking. They are part of a group called mites. Only a few species of ticks attack people and pets. Ticks are parasites. They feed off of the blood of their hosts. Deer ticks (black legged ticks) attack deer but also feed off of other kinds of hosts as well.

There are two groups of ticks, hard ticks and soft ticks. Hard ticks take a long time to feed because they are constricted by a protective plate on their backs. The soft ticks are not so constrained.

Where Can You Find Ticks?

Some ticks stay for most of their life on one animal. Others hide near where their hosts live. People don’t usually come into contact with ticks in their main environment. However, animal hosts bring them into the home. These animals may be bats or rodents or your pets.

Ticks are most active when it is warm. You can also find some varieties of ticks outdoors in places where there is high grass or brush. However, you can also find some in deserts and at beaches.

The Harm From Tick Bites

Most tick bites are not really harmful to people. However, some kinds of ticks can cause what is called tick paralysis with their saliva. Tick paralysis halts once you remove the tick that is causing it. If you do not remove the tick, then it can be fatal in some cases.

Most ticks cause only minor harm when they bite you. However, some ticks transmit diseases like lyme disease. Other diseases that they transmit are babesiosis and human anaplasmosis. It is the deer tick that transmits these diseases.

Removing Ticks

It is important to remove a tick that is biting you as soon as possible. The longer the tick is attached to you, the higher the chance of it transmitting infection. When you find the tick, you should grab it as close to the surface of your skin as possible. Then, pull it straight out. You should not cover the tick with any substances. You should save the tick in case it needs to be examined or tested for disease. The mouthparts of some ticks may remain in your skin after pulling them out, although this is usually not something that you have to be concerned about.

Tick Infestation

Tick infestation can happen if just one tick comes into your home. The tick may reproduce. Usually, they lay their eggs between floorboards. As a result of the infestation, you may find a lot of ticks on your skin or on the skin of your pet.

It is important to check your body for ticks after you have spent time in a location known to have them. The following symptoms may indicate that you have been bitten by an infected tick:

 – Fever and chills

– Body aches and pains

– Headaches

– Fatigue

– Rash

Tick Pest Protection

You should vacuum up any ticks that you find and dispose of the bag immediately. There are also spray and powder insecticides sold on the market that can kill the ticks in your home.

The placement of the insecticide in and around your home may be tricky. Therefore, it is always best to hire a pest professional like UltraPro Pest Protection to do a thorough job. If your pet spends some time outside, it is important to regularly check them for the pests. You should always watch for symptoms in your pet that are abnormal. These may be a sign of a tick-borne illness.
