Brief History
The Chipping Norton Stakes is the inaugural Group 1 race of the yearly Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, which goes down at the Royal Randwick Racecourse. The Chipping Norton Stakes race occurs on either the last Saturday of February or the first one in March. The Chipping Norton Stakes is contested per the weight-for-age ultimatum for over 1.6 kilometres and offers a cash prize of $600,000 to the winner. It is important to note that the competition is open to all horses aged three years and above.
The Chipping Norton began as a Group 2 contest. The race started taking place in 1980, and every once in a while, it was held at Randwick. The race has enjoyed a Group 1 status since 1986. The race was shortened from 2 km to 1.6 km in 1980. Several Chipping Norton Stakes victors are common with prominent champions to win the race more than once, including the world’s renowned mare Shoot Out, Winx, Super Impose, and the four-time victor Tie The Knot.
The lead-up to the competition is through the Group 2 Apollo Stakes, a 1.4 km race hosted at the Randwick Racecourse two weeks prior. Winx is the last horse to conclude both the Apollo Stakes and the Chipping Norton Stakes races. The double win happened in 2016, 2017, and 2019.
On Chipping Norton Stakes day, we have five other Group rank support performances.
