(Newswire.net — August 8, 2022) Orlando, FL — Depression is undeniably one of the most common mental health issues today. It affects people of all ages, including teens and those in their twenties.
A Boston University researcher carried out a survey of almost 33,000 college students across the country.
In this research, it has been found that there was an increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression in young people. Further, it is reaching its highest levels due to stress factors like political unrest, systemic racism, inequality, and the coronavirus pandemic.
“Half of the students in fall 2020 screened positive for depression and/or anxiety,” says Sarah Ketchen Lipson.
Lipson is a Boston University mental health researcher and a co-principal investigator of the nationwide survey published on February 11, 2021, which was administered online during the fall 2020 semester through the Healthy Minds Network.
She is also a BU School of Public Health assistant professor of health law, policy, and management.
The survey has further shown that 83 percent of the students revealed their mental health had negatively affected their academic performance within the past month. Further, the research has shown that two-thirds of college students are struggling with loneliness.
They also felt isolation, which is an all-time high prevalence reflecting the toll of the pandemic and the social distancing needed to control it.
“Even in larger classes, where 1:1 outreach is more difficult, instructors can send class-wide emails reinforcing the idea that they care about their students not just as learners but as people, and circulating information about campus resources for mental health and wellness,” Lipson says.
This is just one of the studies that looked into the prevalence of depression. There are studies that also look into the remedies potentially helpful against this mental health issue.
These include the use of nutrients like B vitamins, which are associated with a myriad of health benefits.
In some studies, B vitamins have been associated with disease-fighting benefits. Some studies suggest that reduced levels of B vitamins are associated with depression. There have also been studies that revealed intake of these nutrients works in reducing symptoms of depression.
