Antibiotics May Cause Immune System Health To Plummet, Experts Warn

(Newswire.net — April 12, 2021) Orlando, FL — One of the ways to increase survival in these times of pandemic is to ensure the immune system is functioning and strengthened.

In various research studies, it has been found that a strong immunity increases the body’s ability to combat viruses and infections. This is why it is vital to avoid factors found to contribute to a poor immune system.

Antibiotics have long been known to cause drug resistance, especially when misused or abused. Aside from this adverse effects, this medication is also found to be potentially harmful to the immune system.

More particularly, it may weaken the ability of the body’s defenses to fight off bugs. Researchers from Harvard, MIT, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and the Broad Institute, carried out a study.

In this research, the investigators looked into how antibiotics affect the body, and how these impacts influence invading bacteria as well as the immune cells of the host. According to Jason Yang, co-first author of the study, antibiotics interact with cells, particularly immune cells, in ways we didn’t expect.

“And the biochemical context, altered by antibiotics and cells in the surrounding tissue, matters when you’re trying to predict how a drug might work in different people or in different infections,” he adds.

The investigators infected mice with E.coli bacteria and treated them with a type of antibiotic. They found that the pharmaceutical drug directly impacted the tissues of the mice, and this in turn altered the metabolites those cells released during the process of metabolism.

It has further been found to reduce the ability of the immune cells called macrophages in battling with infection.

The findings of this research were published in the Cell Host & Microbe journal. James Collins, senior author of the study, says that the drugs are producing changes that are actually counterproductive to the treatment effort.

They reduce the bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics, and the drugs themselves reduce the functional benefit of the immune cells.

For individuals who want to lessen their odds of needing antibiotics, it is recommended to resort to measures that are found useful in warding off urinary tract infections. It is worth noting UTIs are considered to be behind the high use and demand for the medication.

One of the preventive remedies for UTIs is D-mannose, which is a therapeutic type of sugar found in cranberry. It is worth noting that this remedy is widely consumed nowadays through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty D-mannose (https://www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
