Canada Benefit Group is a boutique disability tax credit firm that provides its clients with consultation services, tax and medical analyses, doctor support, and application submission to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The company was founded in 2014. Since its inception, it has served over 1,500 DTC applicants and has helped claimed over CAD 6 million in tax credits.

The DTC is a non-refundable tax credit that reduces the taxes of persons with disabilities or their supporting persons. To be eligible for the benefit, the applicant must be blind, markedly restricted in basic activities like speaking or walking, or in need of life-sustaining therapy. In addition, the impairment must be prolonged and present at least 90% of the time.

The DTC amount has risen in 2020 to CAD 8,576 from CAD 8,416 in 2019, and it has a supplement of up to CAD 5,003 for those under 18.

Canada Benefit Group said that the amount can be “life-changing” as it could be claimed retroactively for up to 10 years, but it estimates that about 50% of eligible Canadians are not receiving the benefit owing to the complicated application process.

An applicant will be eligible for the DTC if the CRA approves their Form T2201—the DTC Certificate. Part of the certificate must be filled out and certified by a medical practitioner.

According to the Senate of Canada, 45,157 DTC applications were rejected in the 2016-17 fiscal year compared to the previous year. This prompted a review of the program by the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, which then released a committee report in 2018, urging the government to reform the program.

“Applying for the benefit on one’s own is possible, but the overly complicated process increases the likelihood of the application being denied or the approved amount less than what one is entitled to,” Canada Benefit Group explained. “Our firm can guide the applicant and their doctor by making sure their case is presented to the CRA with the best possible chance for success.”

A DTC-qualified individual may also qualify for other federal, provincial, or territorial benefits, such as the registered disability savings plan, the working income tax benefit, and the child disability benefit.
