My Best Bark, an online resource for dog owners, has released a report highlighting the benefits and challenges of owning a Chihuahua. The guide also features a short video covering the unique traits and history of the breed.

Blogger, Riley Kay, wrote the latest guide titled, “Is a Chihuahua a Good Family Dog?” to give readers a better understanding of the small dogs and help them determine if a Chihuahua is a good choice for their lifestyle. Readers can expect to find details about the breed’s temperament, training methods, grooming requirements, and more.

Kay released the guide in response to the sharp increase in dog adoption rates since the onset of the global pandemic. With more employees opting to continue working from home, many people seem to be more eager to bring a dog into their family.

Chihuahuas are descendants of the Techichi dog, an ancient breed considered by the Mayans and Azteks to be guardians of the afterlife. Due to their lineage, they are fiercely loyal and protective of their owners making them an appealing family dog.

Chihuahuas typically grow to be between 1 – 3 kg with an average lifespan of 16 years.

While they may be known as the world’s smallest dog, the Chihuahua’s personality is just the opposite. Their tiny stature and outgoing nature have earned the breed a reputation as spunky dogs.

According to the guide, these pups do best when surrounded by people they know, and love to receive attention and affection. However, due to their anxious nature, the breed does best in households with older children.

The guide states that although Chihuahuas tend to bark frequently, this can easily be addressed with consistent training. Chihuahuas tend to bark for a few primary reasons, namely out of anxiety, stress, or fear. Being a smaller breed, these dogs tend to express themselves more vocally to make their needs known.

As stated in the report, “On the whole, chihuahuas are a friendly breed, especially when it comes to their family. They are loyal, loving, and typically are very fond of their owners. When it comes to other family pets, chihuahuas are very accepting of other animals in the home, and typically do deal with them well.”
