The research recorded the dramatic alterations in physical activity, sleep, as well as time use at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The investigators found that physical activity disruptions emerged as a top risk factor for depression during this global health crisis.
Those who were able to maintain their exercise habits were at a significantly reduced risk compared to those who experienced the large declines in physical activity brought on by the pandemic.
It is important to note that physical activity resumed in the early summer, but mental health did not automatically rebound.
“There is an alarming rise in the rate of anxiety and depression among young adults, especially among college students,” said Silvia Saccardo.
Saccardo is an assistant professor in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences at CMU and the senior author of the paper. She worked with her colleagues, Osea Giuntella, Kelly Hyde, and Sally Sadoff.
