The Encinitas, CA nonprofit for disabled persons has released the new guide as part of an ongoing education initiative that aims to help people meet their expenses while searching for a new job. The guide recommends the creation and careful management of a personal budget to minimize expenses during this stage.
The team at disABLEDperson is committed to helping people stay afloat while searching for their next job and suggests freelance work to lower the financial burden of unemployment. Gig work such as Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash can provide a steady income between jobs and in some cases, can even be more lucrative than traditional employment. For many disabled people, medical and other job benefits can outweigh the value of a paycheck.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 19.3 percent of persons with disabilities across all age groups, were employed. Disabled persons also tend to work part-time jobs and have lower employment-to-population ratios.

The unemployment guide is designed to help unemployed people create a workable budget, update their resumes, create a list of job opportunities based on their skills, and review job offers for other factors such as commute distance and fuel reimbursement.
According to a spokesperson for the California disability job board, “We are happy to announce the release of our new guide to help disabled people overcome financial hardship while searching for a new job. We work hard to connect disabled people including veterans with employers and feature more than 250,000 active job listings on our site.”
