(Newswire.net — November 19, 2019) Darien, CT — With the holiday season fast approaching most of us are concerned more about weight gain than we are concerned about weight loss. It is assumed that we will pack on a few pounds so the concept of staying neutral in regards to weight loss is a novel approach to weight management. You may be interested in an Italian study where Glutamine supplementation favors weight loss in nondieting obese female patients. That’s pretty cool if you think about it. Take some supplements, set it and forget it and you have some weight loss. Let’s dig in and find out why this could possibly work.
First of all, what is L-Glutamine? Glutamine is one of the most abundant amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. Proteins are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body. They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs. Here is where the magic comes in L-Glutamine supplementation has been demonstrated to improve insulin sensitivity in critically ill patients, and prevents obesity in animals fed a high-fat diet. L-Glutamine helps the body synthesize protein.
So what is insulin sensitivity and what does it mean to me if I want to lose weight over the holidays? Insulin sensitivity describes how sensitive the body is to the effects of insulin(a hormone used to regulate blood sugar levels). Someone said to be insulin sensitive will require smaller amounts of insulin to lower blood glucose levels than someone who has low sensitivity. When your body requires more insulin diabetes can set in as the pancreas can not sustain the production of insulin. So that we understand each other, your body operates more efficiently when it requires less insulin. The more insulin your body needs it is said to be insulin resistant.
Now this study was done in Italy and they only used obese females as subjects but the results were astonishing. These women did no exercise and did not change their diets all they did was consume 0.5 g/KgBW/day (in basic English this means .5 grams per 2.205 pounds of body weight per day) for the duration of the study. No one likes to divulge their weight. In order to determine how much L-Glutamine you will need to achieve similar results simply take your real weight, not the weight you tell your friends! Say you weigh 185 lbs. Take 185 and divide by 2.205 185/2.205 =82.22. Now there is more math so be patient I am showing you how to lose 6 easy pounds! According to the study you need .5 grams per kilogram of body weight. Since I am a chiropractor and have never grasped the metric system I will assume you don’t have these conversion skills either.
A gram weighs 0.0357 so we need to divide this number in half =.01785 and multiply it by 82.22 to come up with 2.93 ounces of L-Glutamine over a 4 week period. So round up to 3 ounces and start takin L-Glutamine now before the holidays start. So follow my calculations to determine how much L-Glutamine you need or just take 3 ounces a day for a month and see what the scale tells you.
