Experts Warn Against Link Between Air Pollution and AMD Sight Loss

(Newswire.net — August 26, 2021) Orlando, FL — There are many people who struggle with eye health issues, many of which are triggered by environmental factors like pollution.

A study was carried out and published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. 

The UCL researchers who spearheaded the study have shown the link between air pollution and the increased risk of progressive and irreversible sight loss, which is also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

More particularly, those in the most polluted areas were at least 8 percent more likely to report having AMD. 

“Here we have identified yet another health risk posed by air pollution, strengthening the evidence that improving the air we breathe should be a key public health priority,” said Lead author Professor Paul Foster (UCL Institute of Ophthalmology).

“Our findings suggest that living in an area with polluted air, particularly fine particulate matter or combustion-related particles that come from road traffic, could contribute to eye disease.”

The investigators further revealed that even relatively low air pollution exposure seems to affect AMD risk. This suggests that air pollution is an essential modifiable risk factor impacting the odds of eye disease for a very large number of people.

It is worth noting that AMD is the top cause of irreversible blindness among those over the age of 50 in high-income countries. By 2040, it is projected to affect about 300 million individuals. 

Experts say that the known risk factors are smoking, older age, and genetic make-up. Air pollution has also been found to be a risk factor, in addition to being implicated in brain health issues like Alzheimer’s.

The study was funded by Moorfields Eye Charity, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Alcon Research Institute, and the International Glaucoma Association.

More studies are still underway to look into the detrimental effects of air pollution and environmental toxins on the various aspects of human health.
