Experts Warn Obesity Hastens Disability Among Ra Patients

(Newswire.net — April 11, 2022) Orlando, FL — Rheumatoid arthritis is second to osteoarthritis as the most common type of arthritis in the United States. Aside from producing debilitating pain, it could also lead to disability.

A study was carried out and published in Arthritis Care & Research.

In this research involving adults with rheumatoid arthritis, it has been found that the severely obese ones had more rapidly progressing disabilities compared to those who were overweight. The experts say that weight loss following enrollment was also linked with worsening disability, possibly as a sign of frailty.

This research was carried out by Joshua Baker, MD, MSCE, of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and his colleagues.

They looked into information on 23,323 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from the National Data Bank of the Rheumatic Diseases and 1697 from the Veterans Affairs RA registry.

The investigators revealed the link between severe obesity and a more rapid progression of disability. It further found that those who were able to lose weight had the propensity to become disabled more quickly, especially in those who were already thin.

“We believe that this is because when people get older and acquire illnesses, they tend to lose weight. Therefore, the important weight loss in this study is unintentional,” said Dr. Baker.

“So, this study suggests that patients with rheumatoid arthritis and obesity would benefit from intentional weight loss through a comprehensive management strategy; however, when we see that someone is losing weight without trying, it’s probably a poor prognostic sign, especially if they are already thin,” he added.

The findings are particularly essential when considering the increasing rates of obesity in recent years.
