(Newswire.net — February 15, 2014) Portland, OR —

With customizable gender options in your social profile, you can be who you can be all that you can be!

While the first rollout covers mainly the 159 million users in the US, this primarily aimed at giving people more choice in how they describe themselves.

Brielle Harrison, currently undergoing gender transformation, from male to female, who worked on the project, stated “There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world.” She now be known as “Transwoman” instead of “Female”.

Facebook currently has more than 1.2 billion active worldwide will still allow to keep your gender identity private which is a good thing.

Facebook’s move signals their acknowledgement of the nation’s growing transgender rights movement whose vocal activists continually desire their self-identification “rights”. The change is seen as a big step in accepting people who don’t identify with male or female.

The change to the gender selection option is seen as a major step toward acceptance for people who don’t self-identify as male or female.

But is all this fuss worth it for those who believe in two genders, period.

“Of course Facebook is entitled to manage its wildly popular site as it sees fit, but here is the bottom line: It’s impossible to deny the biological reality that humanity is divided into two halves – male and female,” said Jeff Johnston, an issues analyst for Focus on the Family, an influential national religious organization based in Denver. “Those petitioning for the change insist that there are an infinite number of genders, but just saying it doesn’t make it so. That said, we have a great deal of compassion for those who reject their biological sex and believe they are the opposite sex.”

For advertisers, the move indicates some mixed signals, as advertisers attempt to deal with Facebooks ever changing landscape.

Currently, Facebook targets advertising according to male or female genders. If you select something neutral, ads will be targeted based on the selected pronoun. A gender change will not be considered a “life event” so nothing will change or post to the timeline. Facebook did say that advertisers cannot target ads to those who declare themselves transgender or recently changed their gender.
