(Newswire.net — April 11, 2013) — For over 10 years now, Fashion Design Schools Online has been showing interested people information about schools and career training programs in the broad topic area of fashion.

The website’s editor Michael Swanson said, “I don’t think we really expected to be still running this site ten years later when we first built it back in 2003.  There really weren’t too many sites like ours back then, but that has changed somewhat now.”

“There really aren’t many universities that offer four-year degrees in fashion,” Swanson continued, “There are a few, but most prospective students will not be able to find one in their hometown unless they live in a very big city.”

The website points out that the three most popular education areas in the fashion genre are fashion design, fashion marketing and fashion merchandising.

Swanson indicated that students interested in a fashion career but can’t find a bachelor’s degree program in their town could consider either completing a shorter degree such as an associate’s degree, or earning an undergraduate degree in a related field.

For example, Swanson continued, “If a student is interested in the business end of fashion, he or she could earn a marketing degree, but compliment it with a related minor or groups of individual classes related to fashion. Additionally, students now also have the option of obtaining a degree in fashion merchandising, marketing, design, and other related fields online.”

Swanson stated that anyone who is seriously pursuing a fashion career should try to get as much actual work experience as they can before graduation, either through part-time work or internships.  “Fashion internships are very competitive and really hard to find,” Swanson concluded, “So most students will need to get their work experience through positions at good apparel retailers.”
