(Newswire.net — April 14, 2021) Orlando, FL — Health experts have long been stressing the relevance of resorting to techniques that could be helpful in protecting health, including the brain. It is important to note that there are various threats to brain health and they include environmental factors.

A study was carried out and published in Neurology, which is the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

In this research, it has been found that older women who consume more than one to two servings of baked or broiled fish or shellfish may eat omega-3 fatty acids enough to counteract the impacts of air pollution on the brain.

The investigators found that among older women living in areas with high levels of air pollution, those with the lowest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood exhibited more brain shrinkage than women who had the highest levels.

According to study author Ka He, M.D., Sc.D., of Columbia University in New York, fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and easy to add to the diet.

“Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to fight inflammation and maintain brain structure in aging brains. They have also been found to reduce brain damage caused by neurotoxins like lead and mercury. So we explored if omega-3 fatty acids have a protective effect against another neurotoxin, the fine particulate matter found in air pollution,” He adds.

This research involved 1,315 women who had an average age of 70 and did not have dementia at the start of the study. In this research, the subjects completed questionnaires about diet, physical activity, and medical history.

The investigators utilized a diet questionnaire in calculating the average amount of fish each woman consumed every week. These include broiled or baked fish, tuna casserole, canned tuna, tuna salad, and non-fried shellfish.

It is worth noting that fried fish was excluded because according to research, deep drying has the ability to damage omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids as well as other nutrients are vital for brain health. Various research studies even suggest that proper nourishment is vital in warding off diseases affecting the brain.

It is worth noting that nutrients like B vitamins are also considered to be important. They may be obtained through the use of extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex.

It contains Choline, Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin, and vitamin B6.
