(Newswire.net — March 23, 2020) Orlando, FL — The prevalence of diarrhea continues to increase around the world, especially in the United States.

According to research, approximately 179 million cases of acute diarrhea are reported every year in the U.S. The good news is that most of these cases are absolutely preventable.

This was according to a researcher from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

Herbert L. DuPont, M.D., looked into the current causes, prevention strategies and treatment for acute diarrhea in healthy adults.

DuPont is director of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the UTHealth School of Public Health.

He reveals that the main causes of diarrheal infections include not just norovirus outbreaks but also foodborne pathogens. Most of these have been found to come from contaminated leafy green vegetables.

In a study, it has been found that out of the 2 percent inspected spinach and lettuce, 40 percent failed inspection. What makes it all the more alarming is that they could be contaminated by diarrhea-producing E. coli or Salmonella.

“It’s important for people who are experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention if they are sick longer than 48 hours, have fever or are passing bloody diarrhea,” says DuPont.

It is strongly recommended to resort to the helpful measures in reducing the risk of diarrhea.

According to researchers, probiotics may even aid in reducing diarrhea severity. Some studies suggest its use is linked with a reduced risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

It is worth mentioning that the use of probiotics have long been recognized to be extremely beneficial for overall health, especially for the digestive process.

Scientists carried out a study and found that intake of probiotics decreased antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 42 percent. It is also important to note that probiotics aid in other forms of diarrhea not caused by the use of antibiotics.

Multiple studies, including a huge review of 35 studies, have shown that some probiotic strains aid in decreasing the duration of infectious diarrhea by an average of 25 hours. This natural remedy has also demonstrated its ability to reduce the risk of travelers’ diarrhea by 8 percent.

Experts have long been strongly recommending to increase intake of probiotics for various medicinal purposes.
