(Newswire.net — August 25, 2016) U.S., U.S. — A few decades ago, cremation was a lot less popular in the United States and was even barely mentioned in mortuary schools. In fact, cremation rates were as low as 10% in the 1980s. This rate, however, has steadily increased over the years. According to Heritage Cremation Provider, cremation rates have already surpassed traditional burial rates in the country for the first time last year.
Cremation has gotten so popular that it has already become the new tradition. The Cremation Association of North America (CANA) has projected the cremation rate in 2015 to be almost 49% nationwide, while the National Funeral Directors Association’s (NFDA) burial rate estimate was only 45%. Both the CANA and the NFDA expect this trend to go on.
The state of California has had the most number of cremations performed every year. According to the CANA’s projections, the state cremated 157,012 individuals in 2015, followed by Florida which cremated 123,671 and Texas which cremated 73,882. In terms of the share of cremations, Nevada leads the country at 77.4% followed by Washington at 76.3% and then Oregon at 75.8%. Meanwhile, the states of Iowa, North Dakota and Wyoming have experienced the largest increase in cremation rates in the past several years.
The NFDA has projected that cremation rates will go up to 70% by 2030—a complete reversal in about 30 years. The CANA, however, has been more cautious in its estimates, but still projects cremation rates to reach 55% by 2020.
There are several reasons for the increasing popularity of cremation. According to Heritage Cremation Provider, it is often a much more sensible choice for the current generation, which is more mobile than the previous ones. A lot of Americans today no longer live in the same place all their lives, making cremation an ideal option for individuals or families who have relocated too far from hometown cemeteries or family plots. Furthermore, cremation is a lot more cost-efficient than traditional burial. It can save families thousands of dollars since it does not require embalming, a casket, or a cemetery plot. Since cremation is now accepted by most organized religions, people have been more open to doing it.
Due to the rising popularity of cremation, the number of funeral homes has decreased by almost 10%. Seeing as the trend will only keep going, many funeral homes have started providing a range of cremation services and products, and the options are getting more personalized and unique.
