“What if every surface, countertop, wall and table could be an interactive hot zone?” asks Darryl Duschene of NCSALL, a Hamilton countertop installer in Canada. He continues, “I’m talking about an interface to control every element of your home from security, to temperature, lighting and appliances. We’re not that far off.”
In fact, Darryl has stated that he’s been involved in some research and development products in the Canadian home improvement niche. He has also ventured to New York and London, UK to meet with various inventors and companies developing integrable materials and products.
“There is SmartPlanet and Intel with their Oasis technology – all of which recognize ordinary objects and transform kitchen or bathroom surfaces, importantly countertops, into touch screens and smart counters. There are larger entities figuring out the material application, guys like me need to bring it to the homeowner.”
Duschene figures that by 2017 we will see the rollout of smart material design within counter space as being standard. With the ability to preset timers and store digital cookbooks and calendars within your inch-thin countertop, what are we going to do with the free shelf space? Probably just take them down, no?
