(Newswire.net — April 28, 2014) Beacon, NY — Our ancestors knew it as well as native people from around the world. When we move our energy to the rhythmic beat of collective drums, our minds are calmed, our hearts open and we are better able to connect with an inner wisdom that lives within each of us.
Research has shown that drumming can focus the mind, stimulate healing, and create a sense of well-being and happiness. Dr. Barry Bittman of The Mind-Body Wellness Center has conducted several studies, and has found that recreational music and group drumming is an amazing way to reduce stress, strengthen the mind-body connection and allow us to connect with other people using an ancient language we all know.
You can test out Dr. Bittman’s theories every Thursday night at the Beacon Drum Circle in Beacon NY.
The Beacon Drum Circle welcomes drummers of all levels. You don’t have to be musically inclined in order to participate in the Thursday night drum circles – you just need a willingness to feel better, be uplifted, and become inspired and make music with others. You can bring your own drum or other rhythm instruments, or select from the many instruments that are provided. Instruments from many traditions are used together, including African, Afro-Cuban, Middle-Eastern, Australian Aboriginal and Native American.
Although percussion instruments form the core of this drumming circle in the Hudson Valley, there are other ways to participate that includes clapping, chanting and dancing.
The drum circle’s intention is to provide a safe and sacred space where members can heal what needs healing: body, mind or spirit. The Beacon Drum Circle is held in the Beacon Yoga Center on Main Street. The space has plenty of room to accommodate both drumming and dancing.
The power and healing of a community drum circle is formed because the music is spontaneous and created by the group interacting and listening to one another. At its best the music will continuously transform as the drummers and dancers find new voices and opportunities in the rhythms.
As Mickey Hart said, the legendary drummer of the Grateful Dead, ” Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that’s what we are”.
Anyone in the Hudson Valley NY region and surrounding areas are invited to attend (a $5 donation is requested).
