This seems confusing so let’s explain.
 Certain types of arthritic conditions are considered auto-immune. This is when the body attacks itself. The most common types would be rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. They need to be treated differently from back pain that is mechanical in nature.
 If your back pain is inflammatory, however, ongoing inflammation from your immune system will continue to cause back pain even as you attempt to treat your back pain with the above options. Newer medications, such as biologic drugs that target the immune system, provide more precise and effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.
 Back pain due to rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis requires special blood tests to determine their presence. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, you would look at genetic marker HLA-DR4. For ankylosing spondylitis, the genetic marker HLA-B27 is what we would look for.
