Multiple New Studies Now Show Magnesium Is a Research-Based Remedy for Pms

(Newswire.net — September 9, 2020) Orlando, FL — Today, women often turn to the use of pain relievers in dealing with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Experts recommend that some nutrients may actually be helpful in those suffering from this condition.

According to researchers, magnesium has long been popularized by its therapeutic benefits. This macromineral is being widely studied due to the roles it plays for various medicinal purposes.

It is worth mentioning that researchers carried out a two-month trial and it involved 32 women with PMS. They were treated with 360 mg/day of magnesium or placebo from the 15th day of each menstrual cycle to the beginning of the next menstrual period. 

It has been found that those treated with magnesium supplements had reduced menstrual complaints.

Dr Guy E. Abraham and Joel T. Hargrove, M.D, in their assessment have found that individuals with PMS had reduced levels of magnesium in their red blood cells. 

They emphasized that the stress carried along by PMS significantly depletes the body’s magnesium stores, and this worsens the condition.

A study was carried out by Walker AF et al at Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Reading, U.K.

It involved the use of 200 mg of magnesium or placebo for two menstrual cycles.

It is also worth mentioning this study was published in The Journal of Women’s Health.

At the end of the study, the investigators found that 200 mg of magnesium per day led to a reduction in breast tenderness, PMS fluid retention, and bloating by 40 percent.
