(Newswire.net — January 7, 2016) Huntington Beach, CA — Standout University of Arkansas golfer Nicolas Echavarria will be representing his school when he travels to the Dominican Republic the week of January 14, 2016 to compete in the Latin American Amateur Golf Championship, which wraps up on the 17th of January. The winner of this prestigious amateur tournament will have a chance to play in the Masters tournament. Established last year, the Latin American Championship has quickly become a major player in amateur golf competition, having its inaugural tournament play in Argentina in 2015. “120 players comprise the competitor field,” says Nic. “Players from over 14 different countries will be there, and I’m very excited to be a part of this event.” To learn more about Nic, visit https://www.imgacademy.com/tags/nicolas-echavarria.
Hailing from Medellin, Colombia, Nicolas attended high school at the IMG Academy before entering student life at the University of Arkansas. His high school golf palmares are impressive, serving as a member of the Colombian National Team and named by Golfweek as the number 6 boys player in the class of 2012. He has performed at the highest levels of collegiate amateur golf, winning the Mexican Amateur in 2014 by 12 strokes and earning a spot on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll in the same year. As a freshman in the 2012-2013 school year, Nic was also named on the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll. Among his many golfing achievements, Nic is tied for third-best 54 hole score at the SEC Championship in program history, which serves as a testament to the hard work and skill he brings to the game.
Traveling to the Latin American Amateur Championship is a great honor for the young golfing phenomenon, and is an achievement he’s not taking lightly. “My goal is to represent my school, my country, and my family by performing at the highest levels,” says Nic. “Competing for a chance to play at the Masters is like a dream come true for a young golfer like myself.” Nic has a bit of an advantage over the other players going into the Latin American tournament in the Dominican Republic; his brother Andres will caddy for him and has played the course several times during his own golfing career.
