(Newswire.net — September 27, 2014) Omaha, NE — 3 Reasons Trying to Quit During the Great American Smokeout Will Go Up in Smoke!
Thursday, November 21, is the Great American Smokeout, and the American Cancer Society continues its legacy of providing free resources to help smokers quit.
The Great American Smokeout was inaugurated in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for one day. Now, 39.8 percent of the 43.4 million Americans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year, and the Great American Smokeout remains a great opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good.
Local human behavior expert, Tim Shurr, MA, says this is a wonderful movement yet most will still fail to stop smoking permanently. He lists three reasons why…
- Smokers associate pleasure to smoking. Since they don’t know what else to do to effectively relax, under pressure they will undoubtedly return to the comforting habit.
- Smokers tell themselves they can’t smoke, which increases the desire to do so. When this internal struggle is created, smokers give in under the pressure and mounting stress.
- Smokers expect to fail from the beginning. They focus on what won’t work instead of creating an effective plan and executing it.
Hypnotist Jeff Martin says “Many people fail with the Great American Smokeout or New Years Resolutions because they don’t address the root problem, their mind and the way they think about quitting. They never see themselves succeed or overcome the abilty to really want to quit smoking. Hypnosis can help cross those mental barriers. Hypnosis helps align your current desires with new habits.”
