Refrigerant Disposal Techniques and the Future of HVAC

(Newswire.net — June 27, 2014) Toronto, Ontario — Humans posses the unique ability to invent and innovate. We have always applied these innovations to our most basic needs and comfort. Refrigerants are a part of this advancement in home comfort and they have led to energy efficient air conditioners.

CFC’s were the first refrigerant on the market and they posed a lot of environmental problems, mainly the destruction of our planet’s ozone layer. In 1987 the treaty called the Montreal Protocol was signed that banned the production of CFC’s and chemicals that depleted the ozone. It was a great example of mankind pulling together to solve and overcome a large hurdle.

It wasn’t until after this discovery of ozone depletion that scientists began to discover that this was a contributing factor to global warming and temperature spikes.

“Solving the hazardous refrigeration issues from a production standpoint was an outstanding positive. The issues left to close the case on CFC’s and other dangerous materials is the clean up.” says Noah Laird, of Laird and Son Heating and Cooling in Toronto, ON. “There are desposal techniques for older appliances that just aren’t being followed and it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure they are: the appliance owner, HVAC companies, junk removers and landfill operators.”

Although the appliances are out of order or unused, their housing can still disintegrate and leak refrigerant or emit dangerous chemicals. It is a problem that is slowly disappearing.

What are the best ways to manage this issue? Contact a professional HVAC company and inquire about disposal techniques, if they do it themselves or can recommend a company they frequently work with.
