(Newswire.net — October 31, 2022) Orlando, FL — Antibiotic resistance is common not just in the United States, but also in many areas around the globe. Scientists are increasingly carrying out studies to investigate the techniques helpful for battling this rapidly growing global health issue.
Research highlights a poisoned arrow that shows promise for defeating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This dual-mechanism antibiotic could destroy Gram-negative bacteria and avoids drug resistance.
According to the researchers, poison is lethal all on its own as are arrows. However, their combination is greater than the sum of their parts.
The investigators introduce this as a weapon that simultaneously attacks from within and without and can take down even the strongest opponents, from E. coli to MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
The findings of this study were published in Cell journal.
It was carried out by a team of Princeton researchers who found a certain compound called SCH-79797. The such compound has been found to simultaneously puncture bacterial walls and destroy folate within their cells, as well as stay immune to antibiotic resistance.
It is worth noting that bacterial infections come in two flavors — Gram-positive and Gram-negative. The difference is that Gram-negative bacteria are equipped with an outer layer that shrugs off most antibiotics.
“This is the first antibiotic that can target Gram-positives and Gram-negatives without resistance,” said Zemer Gitai, Princeton’s Edwin Grant Conklin Professor of Biology and the senior author of the paper.
“From a ‘why it’s useful’ perspective, that’s the crux. But what we’re most excited about as scientists is something we’ve discovered about how this antibiotic works — attacking via two different mechanisms within one molecule — that we are hoping is generalizable, leading to better antibiotics — and new types of antibiotics — in the future.”
Scientists are increasingly carrying out studies in an effort to reduce the rates of antibiotic resistance, which is driven largely by antibiotic overuse. To reduce the need for antibiotics, it is wise to combat UTIs through the use of all-natural infection-fighting sugar called D-mannose.
