(Newswire.net — January 19, 2021) Orlando, FL — Nutrients like B vitamins have long been reputed to work wonders in delivering a range of healing benefits. Studies even show they aid in warding off certain diseases.
A new Canadian study reveals that intake of high doses of B vitamins in individuals with heart disease reduced the likelihood of stroke, especially for those under 70 years old.
According to Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, other studies have come to opposite conclusions about whether vitamins really protect against cerebrovascular disease.
Dr. Larry B. Goldstein is director of the Duke Stroke Center at Duke University, in Durham, N.C.
“We will need to carefully review this study in light of these other reports,” Goldstein adds.
In this new study, the investigators from the University of Toronto and McMaster looked into the results of a research trial. It involved random assignment of 5,522 adults with heart disease to placebo or a vitamin regimen.
The vitamin regimen included a daily dose of 2.5 milligrams of folic acid (a type of B vitamin), 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 and 1 milligram of vitamin B12.
According to Lona Sandon, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, these levels are higher than people would normally get from their diets or from multivitamins.
The risk of stroke was found to be lesser in individuals treated with the vitamin regimen.
The findings were reported Thursday at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in San Diego.
It is important to remember that B vitamins have long been reputed to work wonders in delivering a range of therapeutic benefits. Individuals who want to increase their protection against stroke may benefit from these nutrients.
A study was published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
According to author Xu Yuming, previous studies have conflicting findings regarding the use of vitamin B supplements and stroke or heart attack.
Yuming is from Zhengzhou University in Zhengzhou, China.
The investigators analyzed 14 randomized clinical trials with a total of 54,913 participants. It has been found B vitamins had been able to reduce the risk of stroke.
