(Newswire.net — August 22, 2022) Orlando, FL — Health authorities have long been warning against alcohol intake, which is quite common among those who struggle with mental health issues.
A study was carried out and published in the Preventive Medicine journal.
In this research, it has been found individuals with anxiety and depression are at an increased likelihood of consuming alcohol during the COVID-19 pandemic than those without mental health issues.
It was carried out by the researchers at NYU School of Global Public Health.
The investigators revealed that drinking actually grew the most among younger individuals. However, there was a sharper increase in the risk of harmful alcohol use in older adults with depression and anxiety.
According to Ariadna Capasso, this increase in drinking, particularly among people with anxiety and depression, is consistent with concerns that the pandemic may be triggering an epidemic of problematic alcohol use.
Capasso is a doctoral student at NYU School of Global Public Health and the study’s lead author.
It is not at all unusual for people to drink alcohol to cope with stress and traumatic events. Covid-19 has undeniably created a number of stress, which include economic hardships, routine disruption, illness, and fear of contagion.
Some studies have also shown that more and more people drink or do it excessively during the pandemic.
It is worth noting that during stressful events, those with existing mental health issues are particularly prone to increased alcohol use.
The investigators made an online survey via Facebook to recruit American adults from all 50 states. They asked the subjects about their use of alcohol during the pandemic and measured depression and anxiety symptoms.
“We expected that younger people and those with mental health issues would report drinking as a coping mechanism, but this is the first time we’re learning that mental health is associated with differences in alcohol use by age,” said study author Yesim Tozan.
Tozan is an assistant professor of global health at NYU School of Global Public Health.
