(Newswire.net — August 22, 2022) Orlando, FL — Experts have long been stressing the relevance of maintaining the right levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This is due to the fact that the condition of the gut has a strong influence on the various aspects of health.
A study was carried out and published in Nature Communications.
The study findings reveal that in chickens, harmless E.coli gut bacteria can easily pick up the genes needed to evolve to cause a life-threatening infection.
According to experts, such infections affect not just the poultry industry but may also cross over to infect humans.
This bacterium called E.coli lives in the intestines of most animals, including humans. It is often harmless when staying in the gut. It gets dangerous when it invades the bloodstream as this leads to systemic infection.
What makes this even more alarming is that it can actually result in death.
It is worth noting that avian pathogenic E.coli (APEC) is an infection most common in chickens reared for meat or eggs. It can actually result in up to 20 percent of cases and leads to multi-million-pound losses in the poultry industry.
This issue is worsened by increasing antibiotic resistance and infections also produce a risk of causing disease in humans.
This interesting research was spearheaded by the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath.
It sequenced and analyzed the whole genomes of E. coli bacteria, which are found in healthy and infected chickens bred at commercial poultry farms. This is to better understand why and how these normally innocuous bugs can become deadly.
They found no single gene responsible for switching a harmless bacterium into a pathogenic one. However, it may be due to several combinations of a diverse group of genes.
The findings suggest that all bacteria in chicken intestines have the potential to get the genes they need to transform into a dangerous infection. This is through a process called horizontal gene transfer
