Researchers Found a Trigger for Increased Weight Gain in Times of Stress

(Newswire.net — April 19, 2021) Orlando, FL — Scientists have been carrying out studies to look into the various aspects of weight gain. In one study, it has been shown that there is a link between stress, diet, and weight.

The findings of this research were published in the Cell Metabolism journal.

The research team was spearheaded by Professor Herbert Herzog, Head of the Eating Disorders laboratory at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

In this study using an animal model, it has been found that the combination of a high-calorie diet and stress led to more weight gain compared to a similar diet in a stress-free environment.

The researchers suggest that this could be due to a molecular pathway in the brain controlled by insulin that triggers additional weight gain.

“This study indicates that we have to be much more conscious about what we’re eating when we’re stressed, to avoid a faster development of obesity,” says Professor Herzog.

There are individuals who eat less during stress while others eat more and choose calorie-dense foods loaded with fat and sugar. The investigators look into the mechanism behind stress eating in different areas of the brain involving mice subjects.

It is worth noting that food intake is primarily controlled by the hypothalamus. However, another part of the brain called amygdala processes emotional responses that include anxiety.

The findings of this research reveal that when stressed over an extended period and there is an availability of high calorie food, obesity in mice was quicker compared to those that consumed the same high fat food in a stress-free environment.

It is interesting to learn that stress has been found to be influenced by a lot of factors, and these include gut health.

Scientists have long revealed that maintaining gut health is vital for overall well-being.

In a study, it has been found that a disruption in the balance of the bacteria in the gut triggers bacteria to influence molecules known as the MicroRNA. Such molecules are found in the part of the brain found to deal with anxiety as well as fear-related behavior.

This has been found to increase the risk of stress or anxiety. This research also revealed that changing the balance of bacteria in the gut can trigger stress and anxiety. Researchers suggest that maintaining balance of bacteria can aid in minimizing stress and anxiety.

The good news is that maintaining adequate levels of probiotics is vital in restoring balance of bacteria in the gut. This is how probiotics could be helpful in fighting stress.
