(Newswire.net — October 17, 2022) Orlando, FL — Osteoarthritis happens to more than 300 million people around the globe. It is the most common type of arthritis in the U.S. It causes functional limitations, pain, and disability, and is widely studied by researchers today.
Researchers from the Boston University schools of Medicine (BUSM) and Public Health carried out a study involving data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study.
It is worth noting data was about the pain experience of 2,794 older adults with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis.
It’s been found that individuals with more pain sensitization were at an increased likelihood of suffering from pain that’s constant and unpredictable, rather than just intermittent pain.
This research for the first time has been able to identify a potential underlying mechanism in the nervous system, which is responsible for why individuals with knee osteoarthritis experience varying pain patterns.
“Our findings support the clinical relevance of neurobiological mechanisms that affect the pain experience in knee osteoarthritis, including not only the severity of pain, but whether the pain is intermittent or constant, and whether the pain is unpredictable,” said senior author Tuhina Neogi, MD, Ph.D.
Neogi is a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Boston University School of Medicine.
Through this understanding of the different mechanisms contributing to knee osteoarthritis pain, healthcare providers can start personalizing pain management for every patient.
For instance, if an OA sufferer has pain sensitization, therapies that can change those nervous system signaling pathways may be helpful. This would enhance the current ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, in which every patient starts having the same treatment and then moves on to something else if the first approach did not work.
“By understanding these mechanisms, determining ways to identify those mechanisms in the clinic, and developing treatments to target those mechanisms, we can provide better management options to the millions of people worldwide with osteoarthritis,” said Dr. Neogi.
There have been many research studies looking into this condition and how it can be remedied. It is also worth noting that today, there are many all-natural ingredients found helpful for pain relief. These include the use of glucosamine, which is an amino sugar useful in repairing joint cartilage damage.
Today, many osteoarthritis sufferers resort to the use of this arthritis-fighting remedy as a safer alternative to pharmaceutical pain relievers. There are many supplements available and one to consider is VitaBreeze Glucosamine.
