(Newswire.net — January 26, 2017) Orlando, FL — Resveratrol is one of the natural substances that many people are utilizing nowadays. Its use may be associated with a myriad of health benefits. It is also believed to have the ability to potentially help fight certain diseases and disorders.

Resveratrol may offer potential benefits for eye disease. Resveratrol is a natural compound that can be found in blueberries, grapes, red wine, peanuts, and other food sources. It is popularly known to help promote longevity.

Scientists have provided some evidence revealing the ability of resveratrol to potentially fight heart disease, aid in weight management, and normalize cholesterol levels. It has also been found to prevent diabetes in certain studies.

According to the vision researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, resveratrol may hinder the growth of out-of-control blood vessels in the eye, otherwise known as angiogenesis.

Resveratrol is believed to have the ability to help protect the eyes from certain diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, which is the major cause of blindness in individuals over 50 years of age in the United States.

This natural ingredient is also thought to help fight diabetic retinopathy, which affects 20% of individuals with diabetes. It is also believed to be effective in protecting the eyes against retinopathy of prematurity. Retinopathy of prematurity develops when there is an obstruction of blood flow in the retina of babies. This condition effects 50,000 infants every year.

Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD, the study’s Senior Investigator, Washington University Retina Specialist, states that a huge deal of research has described resveratrol as an anti-aging compound. Due to their interest in diseases related to the eyes, they want to determine if there is a link.

Dr. Apte’s research team tested the ingredient on mice with abnormal blood vessels in the retina after laser treatment. The findings of the study were published in the American Journal of Pathology. It was found that in rodents dosed with resveratrol, there was no growth in the abnormal blood vessels. As a matter of fact, the existing abnormal blood vessels started to disappear.

The scientists discovered that the reason behind the potential eye-protective powers of resveratrol is the new pathway called the eukaryotic elongation factor-2 kinase (eEF2) regulated pathway. They found the pathway while examining the cells of the blood vessels of the rodents.

While resveratrol can be found in a variety of food sources, but it can also be consumed through supplementation. One of the most popular resveratrol supplements contain extracts of potentially therapeutic ingredients such as grape seed, green tea, red wine, and acai fruit.
