Due to the thorough and intensive nature of Functional Medicine, including research, lab tests, and follow-up care, Dr. Swanson treats a limited number of patients at a time. New patients require a two-hour initial consultation, evaluation, and follow-up treatment sessions. By limiting her number of patients, Dr. Swanson can give them the care they need to achieve their health goals.
Functional Medicine incorporates a patient’s medical, social, and environmental history. It relies on detailed laboratory testing, including GI stool, organic acids, hormone, and micronutrient tests, and complete blood analysis to diagnose accurately. This knowledge is then used to develop a patient-specific treatment program that combines TCM herbs, supplements, exercise, diet modification, meditation, yoga, and breathwork.
After the initial testing, diagnosis, and treatment, patients will typically undergo re-testing after approximately six months to evaluate how they respond to the treatment. According to Dr. Swanson, Functional Medicine is a participatory treatment, and to achieve the best results, patients must commit to the process and report their outcomes honestly. This enables them to take responsibility for improving their overall health care rather than focusing solely on treating symptoms.
“Chinese medicine is my background, and I look to find something natural yet effective over invasive measures such as synthetic hormones, western medications, and surgery. However, sometimes those things are very much needed, and I will refer you to other medical professionals when my experience dictates the need to do so,” says Dr. Swanson.
Dr. Lisa Swanson is certified by the Institute of Functional Medicine, a prestigious and respected training institute. She earned her Doctorate and Master of Science degrees in Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine at the Acupuncture Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, CA. She is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in California and Arizona and has been practicing acupuncture and herbal formulation since 2007.
