The honest to God truth is that most self defense programs are designed to sign women up for a comprehensive martial arts program that is geared to sign up a long term commitment that is semi weight loss, karate, and aerobics. What most programs do not do however is cut to the chase and teach the essence of life saving and escape tactics that most women seeking such a program really want.
As a student of Shaolin kung fu at the early age of 6, I learned the gift of Chinese martial arts from my Shaolin master, Sifu Lau Tsin Tat, who studied in the Shaolin temple and graduated defending people in various towns and counties with his amazing fighting skills. Inherent in his training was embracing and understanding the keys to life and honor without compromising values. He used to talk about the shift in consciousness when life and death was on the line and how it is important to know when and how to turn the switch. He would talk about once the switch was turned, how it was important to never waver off of that thought.
This Self Defense Program spends a good deal of time emphasizing that “shift” in consciousness which is absolutely necessary in order to execute whatever techniques or movements that need to be done to defend or attack a perpetrator. Even a black belt or highly trained martial artist must understand the mental approach to execution of skills.
When I thought through what the best approach would be to offer an effective program, I knew that it had to be short and sweet. I needed to share the essence of the mind and spirit embodied into one in order to make these skills last. I needed to take all of the most important elements that all of my years of training as a master of kung fu shared with me. What travels through your mind and how do I get someone who has never trained in the martial arts, is not particularly fast or athletic, follow through on techniques or moves that can save their life against someone who conceivably is three times their weight and strength?
The answer is that all that does not matter. In the animal kingdom, there are animals of all shapes and sizes, each with their own strengths and abilities to fight and defend themselves and their loved ones. Human beings are no different. Every species has its strengths and weaknesses. It is most important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are and what are those of your attacker, then when it is most opportune to capitalize on which ones.
