(Newswire.net — February 3, 2015) Bridgetown, ST. MICHAEL — St. Nicholas Abbey is pleased to announce its partnership with the Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia, TravelersInsights Magazine and Settlers Beach Villa Hotel in their promotion of holidays for the independent-minded traveler.

In this promotion Settlers Beach is sponsoring a complementary heritage tour to St. Nicholas Abbey as part of its very generous heritage package.

Being one of the only 3 surviving Jacobean-style buildings in the western world, the Abbey is one of the oldest plantation buildings on the island. It is therefore a great candidate for this special promotion, which seeks to highlight the architectural heritage of Barbados as a must-see for those interested in heritage holidays.

As would be expected of a building of that period, the architecture of the Abby was made in the British tradition of the 1600s and showcases both the Jacobean and Elizabethan styles of building and design. The furniture and decorative pieces found in the house also reflect the style and ambiance that time period., even down to the very british fireplaces and three chimneys.

Remarkably, the design of the building has stood the test of time and with stood the Caribbean climate, surviving for over 300 years in the face of hurricanes and the like.

The Abbey’s latest owner, Larry Warren, has not only lovingly maintained the historical integrity of the buildings, but also ensured the sustainability of the Abbey by utilizing the original steam mill from 1890 as well as modern sugar refining equipment to produce high-quality sugar, rum and molasses.  As he says “We are starting with an amazing 18, 19 century mill from Fletcher in England. It is really remarkable that it still exists today, their used to be many in the Island and now it is the last one in the English speaking Caribbean.”

St. Nicholas Abbey offers many attractions to visitors, not the least of which is the lovely film of the one of the original passages to the island and covers early life in the plantation. The plantation produces a vintage rum, molasses and sugar using old time tradition not seen in many places now. Warren comments “Wherever Possible we try to make things by hand. We try to minimize mechanization and equipment. Aging rum is a patient undertaking – you put the very best spirit into the barrel, then it is all about time.”

Visitors to the Abbey can both sample and purchase these products on-site, and can even have the beautifully crafted sugar jars or rum bottles engraved as keepsakes or to give as presents to others.

Travelers booking a stay at the Settlers Beach Villa Hotel during this special promotion can have the opportunity of touring the St. Nicholas Abbey at no additional cost. For more details and to book your special holiday package, please visit
