(Newswire.net — February 3, 2016) Uinta, UT — Every year more than 600,000 people die from coronary heart disease, making this the leading cause of death of in the U.S. for both men and women. In addition to these deaths, more than 1 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year. Unfortunately for most people, symptoms do not appear until it is too late. To help draw attention to this grave issue, STAT+MD Urgent care would like to remind Park City and surrounding area residents that February is American Heart Month.

Throughout this month, health care providers will be working to educate individuals about steps that can be taken to protect their hearts, often by seeking medical attention as soon as possible. As is true with most medical issues, education, awareness, lifestyle choices, and knowing how to spot symptoms and what to do if you suspect someone is in distress are all important to making a difference in preventing heart disease or surviving a cardiac episode.

Dr. Jennifer A. Knepper, Chief Medical Officer for STAT+MD points out that the top five risk factors for heart disease are manageable, and include: elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, Diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, and diet.
Along with educating residents about these risk factors, Dr. Knepper stresses that, “In the event of a heart attack, seconds count. Seeking immediate help, often by calling 911 is critical.” Early treatment has been proven to prevent, or limit damage to the heart.

Symptoms of a heart attack include:
• Chest discomfort – pressure, squeezing, tightening, and/ or pain
• Pain or discomfort in the upper body including jaw, neck, back, arms and/ or stomach
• Trouble breathing
• Nausea, cold sweats, and/ or fainting
If you, or someone you know experience these symptoms, STAT+MD Urgent Care urges you to seek immediate help by calling 911.

In addition to American Heart Month, STAT+MD would also like to inform residents about two other important observances tied to heart health:

Congenital Heart Defect Week: Observed February 7th – 14th, health care providers, as well as the Congenital Heart Information Network work to provide reliable information about advocacy, support services, financial assistance and educational resources to families of children and adults with congenital heart defects and acquired heart disease.

National Donor Day: Observed February 14th, The US Department of Health & Human Services, with support from the Health Resources and Services Association encourage Americans across the U.S. to learn more about organ donation – including, but not limited to heart donations – and how it saves lives.
