Study Highlights the Role of Earthquake-Like Brain-Wave Bursts in Healthy Sleep

A study was published in the PLOS Computational Biology.

It was carried out by Prof. Plamen Ch. Ivanov of Boston University and colleagues.

The findings of this research reveal that there is a connection between brain-wave bursts, which mathematically mimic earthquakes. 

This study involved rats as subjects. Its findings particularly show that cortical arousals and brief awakenings during sleep demonstrate non-equilibrium dynamics and complex organization across time scales, which are needed for spontaneous sleep-stage transitions and for maintaining healthy sleep. 

The investigators gathered electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings of brain activity over multiple days in normal rats. They also included rats with injuries to the parafacial zone, a brain region that helps regulate sleep.

They looked into the bursting dynamics of brain activity patterns, which are known as theta waves and delta waves and are seen in both sleeping rats and humans.

The findings of this interesting research could be helpful in better understanding sleep and enhancing detection as well as treatment for sleep disorders.
