Study Shows Running is good for Mental Health

(Newswire.net — June 20, 2014) Wollongong , NSW — Traditionally running is seen as a great way to keep fit, get into shape and lose weight. A 1.5km run can burn 100 calories, lower blood pressure and keep your arteries nice and healthy. An active runner will also remain strong and flexible for longer, making running a great way to slow down the process of ageing. Vision Personal Training Wollongong Studio Manager Rachel O’Neill, explains that “running can be extremely therapeutic and is scientifically proven to aid stress relief.”

There is no denying that stress can have a large effect on your daily routine and overall health. Your immune system is immediately weakened and any existing medical conditions will be amplified, not to mention that awful ache you get deep in your stomach. Each individual’s body responds differently to stress. Common symptoms include, rashes or acne breakouts, digestive problems, hormonal issues, lack of concentration, migraines and even heart attacks.

Are you stressed? Have you noticed a change in your appetite? Are you often tired? Do you feel tense? Do you experience light headiness or dizziness? If you answered yes, then it is time for you to grab some sneakers and go for a run.

“Whenever I go for a run it gives me some time to be alone with my thoughts and that can be very powerful” Rachel clarifies. You can use this method to your advantage and psychologically deal with a issue you are facing while you run. It could be a minor household issue, office dilemma or an argument that has triggered some symptoms of stress or worry.

While your body is burning calories and psychologically processing a problem as you run, you are also increasing that ‘feel-good’ hormone, endorphins. Endorphins are a opiod  chemical that fuels the body to help it repress the pain, thus making it a great antidote for anxiety.

“After our morning Run Club our participants often feel refreshed, invigorated and have a clear mind to start the day, not to mention that they have burnt some calories.” Rachel explains. Starting the day with a clear mind is a great way to psychologically reset for the day ahead. Many recent case studies have proven that regular runners are generally happier people who cope with stress far more effectively.

Vision Personal Training Wollongong’s Run Club is on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for the members of Vision and has helped to transform countless individuals from unfit and stressed, to fit, healthy and happy.
