Fitness Expert Explains The Importance of Stretching

(Newswire.net — June 20, 2014) Wollongong , NSW — Vision Personal Training Wollongong Studio Manager Rachel O’Neill is a big believer that no workout is complete without stretching. “All of our personal trainers have been brainwashed to encourage all studio members to stretch before they leave the studio, because it is just so important.”

So why is it so important that we stretch?

After a workout stretching serves two purposes, it allows the body to cool down and muscles are elongated again after shortening during the workout. When a muscle is used repeatedly lactic acid moves into the muscle which causes the post workout muscular pain. When the muscle stops working, it is at its shortest and it needs to be stretched back out. If you do not stretch, lactic acid will be left in the muscle which will cause a muscle contraction allowing the muscle to be injured easily.

“Unfortunately there are many personal trainers in the fitness industry who do not seem to understand the importance of teaching their clients how to stretch, and this is concerning” Rachel remarks. The reality is, you should stretch after completing all workouts including cardio, weight training or even low impact exercises, to keep your muscles strong and healthy and prevent injury.

Stretching is especially important during the cold winter months to help your body to maintain flexibility and mobility. Increased flexibility will help to prevent poor posture by keeping the body aligned, improve your balance, give you a full range of motion in your joints and even protect your heart.

“One of the most interesting benefits of increased flexibility is the ability for it to help balance your emotions” Rachel explains.  Recent research by the American Council on Exercise stated that a regular program of dynamic and static stretching increases physical and mental relaxation.
