(Newswire.net — December 27, 2021) Orlando, FL — Over decades, researchers have been warning against obesity as it increases the odds of certain diseases. Some studies also show it is associated with premature death.
One study was carried out and published in PLOS Genetics.
This research was carried out by Cecilia Lindgren of the University of Oxford and colleagues.
The investigators look into how excess weight may exacerbate some causes of death, aside from heart disease and type 2 diabetes. They carried out this analysis to explore the cause-and-effect relationships between death and obesity.
They utilized genetic data and three measures of obesity from 228,466 women and 195,041 men in the UK Biobank.
Study findings have shown that obesity actually contributes to a wide array of health issues. These particularly include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, coronary artery disease, type 1 and 2 diabetes, stroke, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic liver disease, and kidney failure.
It is worth noting that women had a higher odds of type 2 diabetes than men, who were confronted with a greater odds of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease.
The first author, Jenny Censin, said “this study shows just how harmful carrying excess weight can be to human health, and that women and men may experience different diseases as a result.”
Overall, the study has shown that obesity triggers or contributes to most of the leading causes of death on a global scale. It is worth keeping in mind that these are underlying causes not associated with infectious diseases.
Obesity is undeniably a major trigger for diseases and death. Experts are increasingly studying this disease to reduce its prevalence and help people maintain a healthy weight. This is significantly helpful in warding off a range of diseases.
In addition to following healthy dietary and lifestyle habits, it is worth keeping in mind some nutrients are particularly found helpful in weight management. Increasing intake of foods loaded with B vitamins may be particularly beneficial.
B vitamins have long been studied due to their remarkable disease-fighting benefits. Having reduced levels of B vitamins is even associated with the increased odds of certain diseases and symptoms.
