(Newswire.net — December 18, 2015) Richland Hills, Texas — Hubert solved a problem that had vexed mankind for centuries, a reliable and safe hand held source of portable light. By the time of his invention in 1890 many alternatives had been introduced and tried with varying degrees of success.
Over the centuries before Hubert’s invention, individuals had used a variety of portable light sources. First was the torch, think of Indiana Jones in a cave. Next came the candle, Jack had to be nimble and quick with this. These were followed by the oil and then the kerosene lamp respectively.
Then in 1890 Conrad Hubert fashioned his first prototype. It was made out of crude paper and fiber tubes, which had both a brass reflector and a bulb attached. The bulb was constructed by using a carbon filament, which was capable of creating just one brief flash of light when used. It was this “flash of light” that users experienced that resulted in the product being soon being referred to as a flashlight.
Today’s modern flashlights, even after all the improvements that have been made over the years, still consist primarily of the same parts that Conrad Hubert originally used.
Flashlights today are either designed to use LEDS or incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are designed with a tungsten filament which is safely housed in a glass bulb. Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDS, are semiconductors, electronic elements that emit light. In comparison to incandescent light bulbs, LEDS are much more efficient and last a great deal longer for the user.
Nowadays you can find LED flashlights in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. You can find them as part of a pen or an element of a key ring. Yet others can be found being used as headlights for our vehicles or mounted onto helmets for work or play. And many of us find it convenient to have an LED installed on our smart phones.
I believe that Conrad Hubert would be proud and amazed at the many uses we have found for his invention in our daily lives.
