In some ways his untimely death can be a lesson to all of us. He was a very funny man, but many times people that laugh the most are hurting the most. They use jokes and laughter to cover their pain. It is the same with someone that is too outgoing. Many people are this way because the reality is that they are painfully shy. By being the life of the party they can keep people at arm’s length. That way no one gets close enough to realize just how much pain they are really in.

Many times the cause of depression isn’t something that has happened in their lives that causes them to be sad. They may have had a normal life, without too many tragedies. Even when there are tragedies these can be an excuse rather than a cause. It is something to point to so that people understand that they are hurting, rather than an actual cause of the hurt.

What causes depression?

We can rule out a deficiency of Paxil or Xanax, otherwise everyone not on the drugs would be depressed. Typically the cause is a poor diet, so that the person’s body is full of toxins and lacking in nutrients. Antioxidants are key nutrients, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D.  Lack of B vitamins is also linked with depression. The interaction between different nutrients is also key.  So is lack of exercise. Something as simple as dehydration can tip a person into a depression. So can exhaustion caused by overwork or lack of sleep.

The first thing to do is to look at lifestyle and correct the things you see going wrong. Remove all processed foods and replace them with a variety of organic foods. This includes all beverages such as alcohol or sodas, in fact anything besides good clean water. Caffeine containing beverages should be cut back slowly, and sudden lack of caffeine can make depression worse.

The next step would be to get a nutritional screening. There are tests available that help you determine what toxins you have in the body as well as what nutrients you may be lacking. Some of them are even available without a doctor if yours is not supportive of approaching your depression nutritionally. With the results of the tests you should be able to determine what foods you need to decrease and what ones you need to increase. If you are severely low on nutrients it might be beneficial to try supplementation for a while.

There is a whole field of medicine call Orthomolecular Nutrition. Doctors in this field have found such strong links between nutrition and mental health issues that they have begun treating people in mental wards with high dosages of nutrients. They have had great success with Bipolar Disorders, Schizophrenia, and Depression. Understanding the role of nutrition can go a long way to understanding the mental problems we suffer when we lack the proper nutrients. In our world today we have a record number of people, including children, who are on antidepressants.    Is there a link between that record and the record number of processed foods we eat every day? Processed foods provide bulk for our systems, but not the nutritional building blocks that our bodies need in order to function properly.
