(Newswire.net — April 8, 2016) — There aren’t many people who can say they have been coached by an All-American, let alone someone who competed for our country. Well, the students at Inderkum High School in Sacramento, California are able to say they have been.
Former Olympic wrestler Anthony Amado ran a clinic at IHS to help the students get an edge on their game.
Amado started his wrestling career at Benson High School, where he had many accomplishments. He was the Oregon state champion and won the National Age Group Greco-Roman title. Along with these accomplishments, Amado was four-year varsity starter and MVP of his team.
After high school, Amado went to Portland State University to continue his wrestling career. He had many more accomplishments during his time there, as well. Amado competed in the NCAA Division II Championships from 1984-1986. In 1984, the competition was held in New Jersey, but Amado did not place.
The next two years were definitely different for Amado. In 1985, he won the national championship, making him the best competitor in Division II wrestling as a junior. His senior year in 1986, Amado again made it to the championship round, but this time, he fell short of the title.
Once he graduated, Amado continued to push his wrestling career, ultimately trying out for one of the coveted spots on the USA Olympic team. With his perseverance, Amado clenched one of those spots by beating a previous Olympic team member.
Although he did not medal at the Olympics, Amado continued to medal at other events, including three second place finishes at the USA Nationals, a third place finish at the Pan-American Games, and a fourth place finish at the World Championships.
All the kids at the clinic were excited to learn from someone with this much experience. It was a fun event for everyone, filled with lots of wrestling and education.
