(Newswire.net — January 18, 2013) — The use of green roofs in public spaces seems to have skyrocketed. As of last year, Penn State provided a green roof with views from many hospital rooms. The incorporation of this space was cited as needed to help take care of patients in emotional and spiritual ways as well as physical ones. The green roof was also expected to provide environmental benefits, some of which include a better storm water management system.  Other benefits of green roofs were said to be that they can help with temperature management and they can add to the lifespan of the roof’s membrane.

Hospitals all over the world are incorporating these roofs. Green roofs can be up to 100 degrees cooler than other types and can clean pollution from both storm water and air. This coupled with its better storm water management system made it perfect for a facility in Illinois to control the regular flooding that was caused by undersized drains and sewers. The amount of hospitals that have adopted a green roof would take a while to name; some important examples are the Shard Memorial Hospital in San Diego and the one at Duke University. The many health and environmental benefits of green roofs have been taken into consideration, including the expectation that it would help patients heal.

It is not just hospitals and places of healing that are seeing a surge in the use of green roofs. The Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta has undergone the transformation a part of an effort to reduce its energy consumption.  Roofing is an important if often overlooked part of a building and it seems like environmentally and space conscious planners are doing their best to ensure that everyone can enjoy the peaceful environment that a green roof brings. Atlanta, Georgia is one of the cities with the highest amount of green roofs in the country and their use is expected to keep rising in the years to come. The popularity of this type of roofs in shared spaces may extend to residental use.

It is important to know that green roofs can be big open spaces with gardens, but not all of them are. Many are there simply to help with the effects of rainwater and to lower energy consumptions. Green roofs are also known to cut down on the heat island effect.

The main disadvantage of green roofs is the difficulty to find a baseline of benefits. This is because the performance of a green roof can greatly depend on the design of the building it is implemented on. In addition to this, green roofs in big building usually have big start-up costs.  These factors have been taken into consideration before any public place decides to take this step.
