Death Cafe’, a growing phenomenon throughout the world, held its first meeting in New York City this month. Death Cafe is a social gathering to share and discuss thoughts, ideas and personal experience about death in a relaxed and casual place.
“It was inspiring to hear folks supporting the importance of addressing death and the issues around it, both societal and personal,” according to Audrey Pellicano, who coordinated the New York event.
Ms. Pellicano is a Registered Nurse and Grief Recovery Specialist who works with individuals and corporations on grief related issues. The program is co-hosted by Laura Olivares, President, Nothing Forgotten, Inc. a Bereavement Care Service.
Topics discussed included:
- Individual experiences with personal loss through death,
- The new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 5 changes on bereavement,
- Returning to the workplace after a death,
- The death of a less than loved one and
- The death of family pets
