(Newswire.net — June 1, 2013) New York City, NY — Judi Silvano, known for her dynamic and creative style of singing, as well as her watercolor and pastel paintings, will be performing at Zeb’s at 223 W. 28th St. in NYC on Wednesday July 17, 2013 at 7pm. Saul “Zebulon” Rubin (guitar), Ratzo B. Harris (bass)  and Lami Istrefi (drums) will round out the trio. Zeb’s is a rare find in NYC, it’s friendly vibe and relaxed atmosphere are the perfect combination for a great night of jazz. Since it’s opening in May 2009, Zeb’s has featured a Jazz Vocalist every Wednesday evening, followed up with a jam session.

These aren’t your average Jazz Vocalists, fine tuned, high brow and primed for the commercial market. These are vocalists with a passion, a verve, a need to communicate whatever they might be feeling at the moment. There are rough edges and real moments, there are open souls and open hearts. Judi Silvano is one of those open hearts that zing it to you when you least expect it.

Blessed with a 3 octave range and training in dance and theatre, a performance by Ms. Silvano can be focused on original music, standard tunes or surprise repertoire, depending on when you might catch her. With a recent show of her new watercolors and pastels in Montgomery, NY and ongoing concerts, Ms. Silvano stays on the creative edge, exploring new expressions while being very grounded in the familiar. The list of notables she has shared the stage with is long and impressive. She has recorded or toured with jazz greats, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Lee Konitz, Charlie Hayden, Jack DeJohnette, Ingrid Jensen, Rufus Reid, Mike Abene and Wynton Marsalis among others.

As a band leader, Silvano chooses her sidemen wisely. Mr. Ratzo B. Harris, the bassist of choice on many of Ms. Silvano’s recordings and live gigs, will be sharing the stage on July 17th. Mr. Harris, a musician of stellar accomplishment, has worked with many famous names in jazz including Mose Allison and brings a wealth of experience to each performance. The son of two professional musicians, Mr. Harris became interested in music at an early age and embraces both jazz and classical music. This affinity for both jazz and classical music informs the performances that Silvano and Harris give with wit, nuance and inspired musicianship.

In the drum chair for the evening will be jazz drummer, bandleader, percussionist and composer Lamy Istrefi. He was born in the Republic of Kosovo and studied at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria. His electronic experimental band called: REPUBLIQUE ELECTRIQUE, which has involved more than 30 musicians from 20 different countries throughout the world, features some of the jazz worlds most innovative and talented performers.

If you haven’t been to Zeb’s and you like to experience unique creativity, both seasoned and blossoming talent, you should definitely make Zeb’s a night out. For a $10.00 cover, you can listen to your hearts content, relax, not have waitresses scurrying about, not hear the margarita blender and not have to deal with parking. Believe it or not, after 7pm there is street parking.

Saul “Zebulon” Rubin is the proprietor of Zeb’s. Functioning by day as a multi media recording studio, Mr. Rubin is a professional guitarist, producer, recording engineer and artist. But on Wednesday nights, it’s vocal night at Zeb’s. The building itself is unremarkable. You might pass right by it if you didn’t know the address. Located next to an open parking lot and across from a typically boring FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) building, its exterior consists of a storage garage, a small door and a red awning that reads “Greenwich Village Plumber’s Supply.” Yet this building, like many in New York, has a well-kept secret. On select nights, if passersby lean past the red metal gate that blocks the front door, they will see a teal blue sign that looks as though it was made in a high school art class. It says one thing: Zeb’s.

For almost three years, this typical block between Seventh and Eighth avenues has been home to one of the best underground jazz spots in New York. Even though renowned jazz guitarist Saul “Zebulon” Rubin opened the space in May 2009, it remains inconspicuous, a New York haven that only the most dedicated music lovers know.

Alas, although it seems the influence of corporations and big business has taken the element of “soul” out of many of the musical performances these days, Judi Silvano has managed to stay true to her roots in theatre, jazz, classical music, dance and movement, taking inspiration and elements of each, and mixing them together to form her unique performance style.

Silvano is a recent recipient of the Mary Evelyn Whitehill Award (in honor of the renowned Hudson River Valley Watercolorist) at the 13thannual “Artists on Campus” Juried Art Show at Mt. St. Mary College in Newburgh, NY on May 19th for her watercolor painting “Trees in Arrow Park”. Ms. Silvano is immersed in the art of sound and color and these references inform every performance. Part jazz, part creative voice, part poetry, part movement, she manages to weave it all together masterfully.
