(Newswire.net — October 7, 2013) Fort Collins, Colorado — Road races, triathlons, and marathons are one of the fastest growing popular sports with hundreds of thousands of people participating every single year. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to participate due to physical limitations. That’s where the Rocky Mountain Chapter of myTeam Triumph comes in. They strive to provide the opportunity for any person, regardless of physical ability, to participate in and finish a race.

This amazing charity was founded based on the incredible story of Team Hoyt. Rick Hoyt was born disabled in 1962 due to oxygen deprivation to his brain. It wasn’t until 1972 that a computer was invented that allowed Rick to communicate his thoughts, and in 1975 this lead to him expressing his desire to run a marathon with his father Dick Hoyt. After their first race together, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” Because of this incredible story, myTeam Triumph was founded and has steadily spread throughout the country.

“My favorite part is the feeling that comes from watching these athletes throughout the whole process,” says Susan Golicic, President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of myTeam Triumph. “The race preparation, getting their shirts on, getting ready for the race and then the start line; you’ve never seen a smile so big on a child’s face!”

Through myTeam Triumph, disabled individuals known as “Captains” are given the thrilling opportunity to participate in these athletic events with help from their team “Angels.” Angels are athletes that donate their time and energy to ensure that their Captain crosses the finish line. The Rocky Mountain Chapter of myTeam Triumph makes sure the Captain is able to get to and from the race as well as provide any accommodations they need. They also provide provide all of the equipment, including chairs, boats, and harnesses. “Some racers know the captains or are friends,” says Susan, “but when they finish the experience of helping someone cross the finish line, they always say want to do that again!”

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of myTeamTriumph is seeking individuals willing to participate as well as any financial donations to ensure the Captains they sponsor get to enjoy the excitement and the fun that comes from finishing a race in grand fashion. If you would like to participate, visit their website for information about becoming an Angel and a list of upcoming events. Races are made possible through donations from generous supporters.
