Currently there are few aids to educators for the teaching of the First World War. In addition, teachers have a limited amount of time in which to teach the entire war. New methods of teaching about the war that led to the deaths of millions, changed the face of Europe and paved the way for the Second World War are in great demand. The MacArthur Memorial will fill this void with this ten part series.
Working with Director Rory Graham’s Allied Video production services of Chesapeake, VA, the MacArthur Memorial’s first episode of the film series, 1914: The Road to War has been completed and will be made available for international viewing on YouTube on November 1, 2013.
A thirteen minute film, 1914: The Road to War uses rare film footage, photographs, and maps to tell the story of the beginnings of the First World War. As will all films of the ten part series, 1914: The Road to War places its emphasis on discussing and analyzing the Standards of Learning for the First World War. This first episode focuses on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914, the forces of nationalism and militarism, the prewar alliance system of Europe, and the failure of diplomats to avert war in August 1914.
The nine succeeding films will focus on the remaining Standards of Learning requirements for the First World War such as; Stalemate: 1915-1917, Technology, World Leaders, American Entry into the War, Russian Revolution, and the Versailles Treaty.
In November 2013, the MacArthur Memorial will present 1914: Road to War at the Virginia Council of Social Studies Teachers in Roanoke, VA, and the National Council of Social Studies Teachers Convention in St. Louis, MO.
