(Newswire.net — November 3, 2013) Boston, MA —  A new article and informative video from Health News Wires titled Diabetes Increase Linked To Long Naps details new research showing the risk of diabetes may increase with long naps.

Research shows that people who nap for a long period of time are more likely to have an increased risk of diabetes.  This finding indicates that the length of time spent napping may impact the body in different ways.

People participating in the study were separated into groups based on how long they nap; groups ranged from 0 minutes a day to those who napped for over an hour each day, nearly 70% napped on a daily basis.

The findings suggest that the longer time spent napping, the higher the chance of diabetes and increased blood glucose levels.  Those who napped for less than a half-hour a day demonstrated lower blood sugar levels.

Diabetes is group of health conditions that occur when the body is unable to produce enough insulin to rid glucose from the blood, as this happens, the body may develop a condition known as insulin resistance.   This condition often results in decreased insulin sensitivity and may lead to metabolic syndrome.

Other studies have demonstrated a correlation between blood sugar levels, diabetes and amount of time spent sleeping.  Scientists hypothesize that napping during the day may disrupt the body’s natural rhythm, including the process used to produce insulin required to manage blood sugar levels; short naps do not demonstrate the same outcome.
