Zombies have invaded popular culture in recent years, with “The Walking Dead” becoming AMC’s most popular television program and “World War Z” scoring big at the box office. Cosplay events such as Zombie runs and Zombie flash mobs have also joined the pop culture scene. The music video of the Jesse R.S. single “Play” has similarly tapped into this phenomenon, getting over 97,213 hits on YouTube at last count.
The “Play” music video chronicles the struggles of a young man who has found that his girlfriend has become a zombie, and through a series of zombie wrangling methods attempting to maintain his relationship with her. While zombies in music videos have been done before – Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is the most famous example – this is one of the first videos that tackles the new perception of zombie fiction as epitomized in shows like “The Walking Dead” and movies like “Warm Bodies” that unpack and deconstruct a timeworn genre. “Zombies have always seemed like agents of conformity, huge mindless mobs.” Jesse said “This video shows a person dealing with a personal relationship with someone like that, and the dangers of denial of who that person really is because of how you feel about them.”
Jesse admits that he may have had a personal inspiration of his own both in writing “Play” and how the music video turned out. “It’s the first single off of my first album “Drinkers & Jokers.” It’s an older story about my girlfriend and I, back before we were together and flirting with the idea of each other.”
