(Newswire.net — March 24, 2014) Singapore, Singapore — Students in Singapore American School’s (SAS) second-grade classes had the opportunity to demonstrate the school’s core values of compassion, honesty, fairness, responsibility, and respect, by helping others in need.

Both Mr. Daniel Gach’s and Ms. Kristen Kwiecien’s classes were honored to participate in an interdivisional Caring for Cambodia (CFC) project with Ms. Barbara Harvey’s high school art students. Each project involved each class making two books, one based on Rainbow Fish and the other on the classic children’s story The Hungry Caterpillar.

Each class’s goal was to create a book to send to Cambodian students to put into their own library. The younger students were paired up with a high school ‘buddy’ from Ms. Harvey’s art class. They saw photos of the Cambodian children and the school they attend. They could see that the Cambodian children were not always as fortunate as themselves, and able to attend as nice a school as SAS.

They enjoyed creating and designing art and decided to adapt The Hungry Caterpillar story specifically for the Cambodian students – instead of the traditional fruits, these caterpillars ate fruits like rambutan, persimmons and papayas. The stories were written and translated into both English and Khmer.

Mr. Gach shared, “All of the students in our class really enjoyed this project – not just creating the books and artwork, but also making new friends and learning more about students like themselves in other countries.”

“All our students had fun! The best part is expanding their horizons so it’s still educational, yet fun too. As teachers we really enjoyed participating on this project. This is implementing SAS values and putting them into action,” said Ms. Kwiecien.

Established in 1956, the school primarily serves the American and international expatriate communities of Singapore. SAS is registered with the Singapore Council for Private Education, affiliated with the Office of Overseas Schools through the U.S. Department of State, and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
